Unfortunately, there are no fully preserved garments among the excavation materials found in Rus region, however, the found fragments provide information about various types of vestments, including undershirts, overshirts and even caftans. A significant number of parts of linen undershirts and woolen top shirts, woolen and linen open caftans, as well as one linen long shirt (probably of Byzantine origin) were found.
Design and structural details are common to all of the finds. Those include frontal and back parts cut from a single piece of fabric, with a round or semi-circular neckline, sleeves, gussets and triangular wedges, which are added to widen the hem of many garments.
Below is a pattern generator designed for standard sizes of both children and adults (from the age of four and up to a size of 4XL).
A note about female shirts.
A women's shirt is tailored in the same way and pattern as a shirt for men so you can safely use our generator to make a pattern for yourself. The only difference will be in the length of the garment. Men’s shirts are usually measured up to the knee and the shirts for women are measured to the ankle in length.
Perhaps one more tip could come in handy for you: set the length of the white undershirt just above the ankle so that you could keep your bottom part of your garment cleaner during the festivals. As for the colored overshirt – feel free to cut it in such a way that the length of it covers the ankle. This way you may lengthen the silhouette and emphasize your beauty.
